Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft’s museum’s dye garden is a unique place where we grow plants that can be harvested for natural dyeing. Join this tour by Head Gardener Liz Pope and find out more about the garden and the process of natural dyeing. Feeling inspired? Pick up your own seeds in our shop and give it a go yourself!

BIG DRAW: Make the Change

Join illustration students from the University of Brighton for two days filled with drawing inspired by the Big Draw theme for this year; Make the Change.
The students will devise drawing activities around the environment and how we can all make a positive impact on helping to look after mother nature and our beautiful plant.
No drawing experience necessary. All materials supplied.

Let’s Make Some Great Art Animals with Marion Deuchars

Join award winning children’s book illustrator and author Marion Deuchars for a mini masterclass as part of the BIG DRAW.

Make some great art animals – from koalas to elephants, frogs to dogs. Get drawing, colouring, cutting and sticking to make your animals to take home with you.

British illustrator and author Marion Deuchars publishes beautifully illustrated children’s books and has created her own globally recognised style of hand lettering.

Graduating with a distinction from the Royal College of Art in 1981, Marion went on to co-form an art and design studio. Her output has seen projects that span across corporate literature, publishing, editorial, packaging, advertising, web, brand development, craft and interior design. Marion’s work with major design and advertising agencies include commercial clients Royal Mail Stamps, Carluccio’s and the Imperial War Museum, resulting in gold and silver awards at the Art Director’s Club New York and four D&AD pencils.

Her ‘Let’s Make Some Great Art’ series of art activity books for Laurence King Publishing have won numerous awards and translated into 22 languages.

She has also written and illustrated many picture books, including; Bob the Artist about a Blackbird who finds his true self through the power of art.

Born in Scotland, Marion now lives and works in North London. She is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale and a Royal Designer for Industry.

Taking a Line for a Walk marks 50 years of revered illustrator John Vernon Lord’s life and work in Ditchling. Lord is one of Britain’s most recognised and respected illustrators, owing both to his own practice, and his pioneering contribution to education across almost six decades. Lord has illustrated many classics of English literature including the work of Lewis Carroll, Edward Lear, Aesop’s fables and James Joyce and is regarded as a pillar of the local arts community in Ditchling where he has lived since the 1970s. Also an author in his own right, Lord has written and illustrated a number of children’s books including The Giant Jam Sandwich (1972), which has since become a modern classic.
